English Language, Culture and Education in Nigeria: Issues and Prospects

Abstract:

The author describes the relationship between contemporary culture, the English language and education in Nigeria in the context of current linguistic nationalism, globalization, cultural identity and national development agenda. He observes that the relationship between the English language, culture, and education in Nigeria has passed through six stages in metamorphosis which are the exploration stage, the stage of trade and commerce, the era of the ‘coast English’, the era of missionary activities, the era of ‘non- standard English’, the era of colonization and the era of ‘Nigerian English’. Prof. Omole later explores the relationship between the English language and culture, on the one hand, and between the language and education, on the other. He then offers some opinions on the prospects of the tripodal relationship between the concepts.
